KENDO

We offer classes for youth ages 10 and up and adults. We encourage parents of youth to attend as well!

We have basic equipment available for students to begin practice with including shinai and armor.

Kendo (Japanese fencing) is similar to fencing in that both sides use a sword to attack and defend and score points in free-style sparring. Kendoka use bamboo swords and wear armor to score points against specific targets. It's fast paced and quite exciting!

About the Class

Kendo adds a sporting aspect to the Japanese sword arts. Kendo is essentially free, full contact sparring, with a flexible bamboo sword and protective armor. This class introduces students to the sport and shared etiquette of the sword. Beginners start with shinai training to learn the basics of sword handling, movement, strikes, and etiquette. As a student progresses, they'll put on the armor, and start sparring. Typically it will take a few (3-4) months of shinai and kihon (basics) practice before being able begin sparring.

Methodology

Kendo involves conditioning and training for months to teach the kihon (basics) before a student puts on armor to begin actual sparring.
Students are taught in a typical Japanese manner of demonstration, repetition, adjustment. The more experienced (Senpai) will instruct the junior (Kohai) in a mentoring style of instruction. Students learn respect for each other and form lasting relationships.
