IAIDO

Because we work with swords (katana - both wooden and dull) in Iaido, we offer Japanese swordsmanship classes for youth ages 13 and up and adults. We encourage parents of youth to attend as well!

Iaido (Japanese swordsmanship) is a series of movements against one or many imaginary opponents using a katana. The iaidoka draws the sword, makes the cuts, shakes off the blood, and re-sheathes the sword. Breathing, posture, and timing are important in striving to perfect the movements. In all, we practice 60 different patterns!

Musoshindenryu Lineage

At the Agassiz Dojo, we are honored to train under the guidance of Kazuhisa Kaneda Sensei, a distinguished Iaido Kyoshi 8th Dan and revered instructor at the International Budo University in Katsuura, Japan. Kaneda Sensei, an eight-time All Japan Iaido National Champion and author of the acclaimed Iai no Kihon (Iai Basics) book and DVD series, is a leading figure in Musoshindenryu Iaido and whose lineage traces back to the founder Nakayama Hakudo.  Training under Kaneda Sensei’s direct instruction connects our students to this rich legacy, offering an authentic and transformative experience rooted in one of Japan’s most respected martial traditions.
The Agassiz Dojo is the 2nd US-based dojo to join his family and members of our dojo regularly attend seminars led by Kaneda Sensei training in both Musoshindenryu and Seitei iaido.
